A-Thermal undertook a major in-Situ Soil Remediation Project in Durban.
The site was contamination as a result of a leaking pipeline of leaded fuel. During the site inspection, it was evident that the soil and the groundwater was significantly contaminated. The nearby residence were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to health and safety concerns (primarily due to exposure).
The project involved utilizing a Soil Vapour Extraction technique for the in-situ treatment of the soil. We were able to recover 1.2 million litres of leaded fuel that the client was able to reprocess. The remaining Non- Condensable Organic fractions from the process was then thermally treated by A-Thermal’s Mobile Thermal Desorption Plant (Capacity: 2 tons/hr), in turn the off-gases were scrubbed using our unique Gas Clean-up technology before being measured (by a Continuous Emission Monitoring System) and discharged to the atmosphere.
The groundwater was also treated using by using a combination of separation and filtration methods. The project took 4 years to complete.
